The brief to AJW Construction called for the complete refurbishment of two floors of the old St Patricks Church on York Street, Sydney. Working with designers BKH the ground level interior involved a series of consulting rooms sympathetic to the heritage-listed church, requiring careful work to maintain the building’s original details and the insertion of a new staircase between levels. The downstairs engine room designed by Anthony Vavayis & Associates involved the fit-out of a series of operating theatres, recovery wards, wash-up rooms, waiting rooms, and staff amenities, including lockers, bathrooms, and a kitchen. The 2 million dollar project was a 3-month build with considerable coordination with existing services and stringent hospital building code compliance.
